The Essentials of Diffusing
We all like to have our homes smell fresh and clean, but did you know that scented candles, air fresheners and plug-ins are filled with harmful chemicals, some even containing carcinogens, and that these can be hormone disruptors?
So if artificial fragrances are not good for our over-all health and well-being, can we still have a fresh and sweet smelling home?
The answer is YES! This is why the diffuser you get in your starter kit is so invaluable.
How Does a Diffuser Work
There are two main types of diffusers, atomizing (or nebulizing) which dispense undiluted essential oils into the air and those that use water as part of the process. We will be focusing on the second type of diffuser in this article. Ultrasonic essential oil diffusers use ultrasonic technology to break up the mixture of essential oils and water into extremely fine microparticles and disperse those ingredients into the air. Diffusers provide an excellent way to build a healthy, natural and pure living environment. There are a variety of essential oil diffusers on the market, but I like the ones that Young Living offers. They have a wide range of styles and prices. You can check out the many options available by visiting the Young Living website under the Diffusers & Tools category. If you need more information about choosing a diffuser check out the blog titled “Choosing the Right Diffuser” on this site.
Benefits of Using a Diffuser
There are three main benefits to using diffusers.
- The use of the
diffuser can help you support your over-all physical well-being.
- The support the aromatherapy can give to inspiring a positive emotional state
- The diffusers help to neutralize odors and freshen the air in your home or work place.
How To Use Your Diffuser
Diffusers are so easy to use, there is no reason not to have them running throughout your home all of the time! If you haven’t yet, take the diffuser out of the box, fill the water reservoir to the fill line, next add some drops of an oil or two, plug the power cord into the base of the diffuser and then into the wall and push the power button at the front of the diffuser. That is all there is to it!
Some of you may be wondering how much oil to use. This is going to depend on how strong you like the scent and how big of a space you have. I would recommend starting with 2-3 drops of oil, and then you can increase the amount as you learn your preferences. I tend to like my scents strong and have very high ceilings in my home so I usually use 8-12 drops of oil.
How to Clean Your Diffuser
Occasionally, you will need to clean the diffuser because the oils will build up on the interior over time. Cleaning it is very simple. You will need a small amount of rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab. Dip the swab into the alcohol to saturate it, then rub the swab over the ultrasonic plate to remove any oily build up. Use a soft cloth and wipe the interior of the water reservoir. I like to also use the cotton swab dipped in alcohol to clean around the lid ventilation hole, the splash guard and the mist spout. If you use your diffuser frequently you will need to clean the ultrasonic plate about once a week. If you notice a slightly sour smell when you run the diffuser, you can half-fill the water reservoir with water and add a half a teaspoon of white vinegar, then run the diffuser for 5-10 minutes. Empty out the water and wipe the interior with a soft cloth.
Diffuser Combos to Get You Started
These are some of my favorite combos to use in the diffuser. Remember, you can adjust the number of drops depending on how strong you like the scent and the size of space where you are running your diffuser.
Wellness: 4 drops Thieves and 4 drops Frankincense
Sleepy Time: 4 drops Lavender and 4 drops Copaiba
Rejuvinate: 5 drops Stress Away and 3 drops Peppermint
Breathe Well: 4 drops Lemon, 4 drops Peppermint, 4 drops Lavender
Freshness: 4 drops Purification and 4 drops Lemon
Now that you are in the habit of using your diffuser, you are going to want to consider investing in some additional diffusers for your home. My goal is to have a diffuser in every room! When you purchase a diffuser from Young Living separately you get some bonus oils so it is a great way to also add to your oil collection.
There are some wonderful oils outside of the starter kit that have become favorites for me to use in the diffuser. Some that I would recommend are other citrus oils such as orange, lime and citrus fresh, some of the “woodsey” smelling oils like cedarwood or Idaho balsam fir, and two of my favorite more floral smelling oils are geranium and patchouli.
One of the ways I have been able to expand my oil collection is by signing up for Young Living’s autoship program, Essential Rewards. If you haven’t done this the benefits are fabulous! You earn points back on each order and with qualifying orders you get free products. This is really a must for all serious oily users.
Have fun using your diffuser!
